VB: 2023-24 Canada West Volleyball Schedule Released

Opening night set for Oct. 20

June 15, 2023 - High-flying Canada West volleyball action is set to return this October.

The conference has unveiled its 2023-24 volleyball schedule, with men's and women's action getting underway Oct. 20.

The regular season will span 14 weeks before playoffs begin on Feb. 23. Semifinals run from March 1 to 3, with conference champions set to be crowned on March 9.

Canada West is coming off another successful season on the national stage, with CW teams capturing both men’s and women’s U SPORTS titles. The UBC Thunderbirds women’s volleyball team claimed its 13th national title last season, while the Trinity Western Spartans (TWU) men’s volleyball team captured its seventh national championship.

This year’s U SPORTS national championships will be held in Ontario from March 14 to 17. The women's event is headed to McMaster University in Hamilton, while Queens University will host the men’s tournament in Kingston.

WVB: UBC, TWU look to defend titles

Both UBC and TWU will look to defend the banners they brought back to the west coast last season.

Their clash in the U SPORTS championship game last March was an instant classic, with the host Thunderbirds emerging victorious in a thrilling five-sets.

Fans will have to wait until Feb. 2 and 3 for a national championship rematch in Vancouver, but it will undoubtedly be worth the wait.

Despite falling just short at nationals, TWU had a remarkable season. The Spartans had an impressive 22-2 regular season record and went 5-0 in the Canada West playoffs, capped by a straight sets win over Mount Royal University in the conference final.

The Spartans and Cougars collide for a CW title game rematch Jan. 5 and 6 in Langley.

Other schedule highlights in 2023-24 include a cross-town showdown between Manitoba and Winnipeg on Feb. 2 and 3. The Bisons topped the Wesmen in a dramatic Canada West bronze medal game last season, securing the program’s first nationals appearance since 2014.

MVB: Spartans, Golden Bears look to stay on top

On the men’s side, Alberta and TWU will look to continue their recent run of dominance.

The pair have matched up in the Canada West men’s volleyball final in each of the last three seasons. Between them, they’ve also laid claim to the last three U SPORTS national championships, too.

The Golden Bears enter the new year as defending Canada West champions, earning their first conference crown since 2015 with a 3-1 win over the arch-rival Spartans in last year’s final.

TWU then penned a different story on the national stage, rolling to the seventh U SPORTS national championship in program history.

The two powerhouses will link up for highly anticipated showdowns Nov. 10 and 11 in Edmonton.

The Saskatchewan Huskies will be another team to watch, as the defending CW bronze medalists look to build off their first national championship appearance since 2016.

A rematch of their bronze medal showdown with the Calgary Dinos is set for Feb. 2 and 3 in Calgary.
