Jo Laverty returns to Darwin Radio

ABC Radio Darwin has released its content and presenter line-up for 2019.

The line-up sees a new addition to the on-air presenting team and a change of timeslot for one of the station’s much-loved presenters.

After a decade working interstate, Jo Laverty is coming home to Darwin to present Weekday Breakfast. Jo was born and raised in ‘old’ Darwin and has spent over twenty years working in radio including stints at triple j and ABC Radio Canberra.

Steve McClelland, Local Manager ABC Darwin, said: “It’s great to have Jo back in the Territory and re-joining the ABC Darwin team. She is warm and funny, knows the quirks of the Top End and will be a great way to get Darwin going each morning”

Adam Steer returns in Mornings and will also co-host 8.30am – 9am with Jo Laverty. Mikaela Simpson will take on a new role as Territory-wide Afternoons presenter and Georgia Hitch will continue in Drive to March when Liz Trevaskis will take the helm. Richard Margetson returns to ABC Radio Darwin as Territory-wide Evenings presenter.

And the NT’s Senior Australian of the Year, Charlie King returns for Territory Grandstand.

Mr McClelland continued, “The 2019 line-up is a combination of youth and experience and will continue ABC Radio Darwin’s tradition of informing and entertaining the top end community.”

Jo Laverty

Jo was born and raised in ‘old’ Darwin, before there were awesome water parks, wave pools, or even air-conditioned classrooms.  Back then, riding your bike around the suburbs with no hands on the handlebars was a seriously good time!

She was offered a traineeship in broadcasting with Hot 100 in the late 90s, where her moniker was Back Alley Sally; a name which probably wouldn’t be all that cool in today’s social climate.

Since then, Jo has spent twenty years working in radio, which has taken her to the copper outback of Port Augusta, to the sparkling aquamarine waves of the Whitsundays, and finally to Canberra where the winters are cold, but the coffee is very good.

Jo has recently graduated from the Australian National University as a mature-aged student with majors in political science and history, which she mostly uses to force her kids to do the housework (there are few things more effective than banging on about working conditions during the industrial revolution to make a 9 year old finally unpack the dishwasher).

She is looking forward to returning home to play at the water parks with her kids, hang out at the markets, drink lots of iced coffees, and getting back into the territory lifestyle.
